I’ve been listening to a lot of The Decemberists lately. I want to make a joke about how I’m always behind the curve when it comes to music, but not this time! I actually discovered them right about the time The Crane Wife came out, although it’s only recently that I bothered buying anything else. So ha! Take that, tired old joke that my music collection was frozen circa 1995 (this is not an entirely false statement).
Anyhow, I thought I’d share this Tiny Desk Concert from a few years ago because I like it.
Also the video for “This is Why We Fight” although I’m really not completely sure what’s going on in it, to be honest. It feels like it’s trying to be smart in a way that I’m just not grokking. And I’m not buying the dystopian setting. But I like the song a lot and parts of it evoke R.E.M.’s “Talk About the Passion”, which is a good thing.
Oh! And Colin Meloy doing a cover of a Guadalcanal Diary song about murder, “Please Stop Me” (I think it’s about Jack the Ripper, but I’ve had like 20 years to think about this).
Perhaps I will write a whole post about murder ballads I have loved. Because, oh man. Do I love me some murder ballads.
