I’m too tired to write anything interesting, so let’s get on with the links.
- Why are we so obsessed with Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes? “She blinks reluctantly, with such vaguely reptilian slowness that it really does seem like she’d opt out of the basic bodily function if she could, in order to better maintain unbroken eye contact with whoever she’s speaking to.”
- Can we just, like, get over the way women talk? “Asking women to modify their speech is just another way we are asked to internalize and compensate for sexist bias in the world.” I find it interesting that Friedman doesn’t bring up Elizabeth Holmes in this piece, considering that she commented about all the comments people were making about Holmes’s voice in her newsletter. I know I’ve talked about Holmes’s voice–not in great detail, but I have expressed astonishment that she used a different voice entirely while at Theranos–and it’s that that I find so interesting, that she didn’t modulate her natural voice slightly downwards to sound more serious, but decided to go almost comically far with it.
- Listen up bitches, it’s time to learn incorrect things about someone you’ve never heard of. “The other thing I know for sure is that, if I were so inclined, I could turn all of the above into an intoxicatingly abrasive thread and briefly become a bright star in the firmament of what I like to call ‘Buckle Up Twitter.'”
