Pictures of a Book Being Made, Kristin Cashore

  • Pictures of a Book Being Made A peek into how Kristin Cashore wrote Bitterblue, one of the best books of 2012.
  • Note to People Thinking of Writing Autistic Characters Making the extremely excellent observation that people are not reducible to their impairments from someone who is autistic.
  • Cover Posing for a Good Cause You give money to the Aicardi Syndrome Foundation and Jim C. Hines will recreate ridiculous cover poses. As of this writing, there will also be two pose-offs with John Scalzi.
  • The Lying Disease Faking illness on the internets and how this affects people who actually are ill.
  • Cooking the Books: The Roundtable Two words: maggot cheese.
  • The Sunday Salon: Graffiti Reviews How dare those women bloggers think they’re allowed to have opinions about books?
  • To Be a Woman and Speak Your Mind This is great and talks a lot about the culture of nice.

But there is something particularly tricky in being a woman and expressing an opinion. It’s difficult to hold your ground, to push back against what other people tell you or suggest you should do or say or think or behave. It’s risky to be assertive and stand up for yourself. Because no matter what, your words and your actions are scrutinized on the basis of your being a woman.

  • The Benefit of the Penis This is also great and deals with women’s voices in Christian communities.
  • When “Bullying” is not Bullying “Enforcing arbitrary niceness rules via the threat of stalking—a SGRB tactic which has been well-documented at the above site—doesn’t encourage honesty, to say the least.”
  • Money Flows from the Writer Genreville on Duotrope’s decision to charge users.
  • Helping You Write Your Next Mission Statement, One Bullshit Line at a Time I’m using this the next time I need to write a memo at work.
  • Playing Assassin’s Creed on the Pine Ridge Rez
  • I Did the Math: Towards a More Diverse NYT Notable Book List
  • Genre Wants that I Hope Become Gots Also, there’s a “sad peen” picture.
  • The Killing of Kasandra Perkins by Jovan Belcher “Appropriating a human life as a vessel for his rage.” Pretty much sums it up.
  • The Ivan Book Jo Walton’s review of Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance.
  • Couple of great posts over at Anna Cowan’s place: The First Time Fallacy (full disclosure: this post inspired me to share the circumstances of how I lost my virginity on Twitter) and Reading while Academic: Or, Id, Ego, and Superego (guest post from Liz McCausland)
  • Historically Authentic Sexism in Fantasy. Let’s Unpack That. YES. THIS.
  • “We’re so lucky, we who read.” I might have gotten a bit of dust in my eye after reading this.
  • Creepily awesome dioramas inspired by 19th century women novelists If I had a few thousand extra dollars, I’d buy all of these. Instead, let me leave you with my two favorites:
Julia Callon, Jane Eyre No. 1, 40” x 26”, edition of 5

Julia Callon, Jane Eyre No. 1, 40” x 26”, edition of 5

Julia Callon, Jane Eyre No. 2, 40” x 26”, edition of 5
