Links Roundup 29 June 2018

My vacation was awesome (see above). The last two weeks of news–not so much.

I’ve been thinking about this bit from Lord of the Rings:

Frodo: “I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.”

Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

I’ve been reading and rereading one of Austin Kleon’s posts from this week, Knitting at the End of the World, which lead me to this poem by Bertolt Brecht:

In the dark times
Will there also be singing?
Yes, there will also be singing
About the dark times.

These are dark times and getting darker. Let’s sing together.

  • Last week’s Noticing was about the bigger picture and I’ve also been thinking about Tim’s last paragraph all week:

All we have is each other. And this world can be so beautiful. I hope we let the world be beautiful. I hope we find a way to save it, despite the people willing to let it burn. It’s the only way to save ourselves.”

  • This remembrance of an encounter with Mr. Rogers is beautiful and it made my face get wet.
  • There’s also this fan comic about Garfield.
  • Puppies!
  • “I hope we can all find a way to be General Organa, for ourselves and each other. May we all be able to get up every day and, in spite of our pain and loss and fear, put on our boots and our earth-tone vests and plan to destroy the Empire.”

If you’re in crisis, please reach out and ask for help. We need you.

Thank you for this set of links. I really needed the shot of warmth and inspiration after all the horrors of the last couple of weeks.
