Pretty Terrible

Pop Culture Criticism by Natalie Luhrs

spring has gone

  • My Wife’s Struggle With Cancer One hell of a read–raw, honest, and upsetting.
  • Yoko Ono and the Myth That Deserves to Die It’s only as I’ve gotten older that I’ve realized what an incredible artist Yoko Ono is–growing up, she absolutely was a punchline to entirely too many jokes and that’s a shame.
  • A crying shame: Women could use a little of the shameless confidence men take for granted
  • The Agency WOW. This is bonkers.
  • Sorting Out This Current Kerfuffle of Playing Songs by Women on Country Music Radio So this is a perfect description institutional bias and how the bias is built right into the structure of of the institution–and I’m 99.9% sure that the author didn’t intend any such thing. And yet, there it is.  This is also an illustration of the homogenizing nature of capitalism and the eternal quest for profit.
  • A Manifesto On Diversity In Public Media
  • Addy Walker, American Girl American Girl dolls were introduced the year I turned 12, too old for dolls. My sister got the catalog, though, and I remember being consumed with longing.
  • Pink Slips at Disney. But First, Training Foreign Replacements. Hey New York Times? This isn’t a new trend. I’ve known a lot of people who have been put in this position over the years–usually, though, the foreign replacements are still living in their country of origin. Which makes training extra-fun and exciting due to time zone differences, having to train remotely, and language barriers.
  • Making Victoria’s Secret Pay For Keeping Staff On Call
  • Errol Morris: How Typography Shapes Our Perception Of Truth
  • I Grew Up in a Polyamorous Household
  • Write back (not) in anger I found this to be an entertaining read. And it makes me want to pick up some of David Mack’s books, even though I don’t normally read media tie-ins.
  • That Pesky Empathy Thing Really fantastic post from Olivia Waite which gets to the bottom of my discomfort with the recent essay defending rape fantasies on Dear Author. “I don’t trust anyone, not even myself, to consent on a heroine’s behalf. I’m rooting for her and her happy ending. I’m on her side.”
  • Revealing Caitlyn Jenner: My Thoughts on Media, Privilege, Healthcare Access & Glamour I found this to be a really comprehensive post about the media hoopla this week surrounding Caitlyn Jenner.
  • The Duggar Parents Aren’t Victims. They’re Perpetrators.  YEP.
  • eyes I dare not meet in dreams This is a story that I thought was pretty awesome.
  • They Built It. No One Came. Sad and yet it isn’t completely sad, either.  Apparently marketing is super-important when it comes to communes and intentional communities.
  • A Tumblr User Wrote An Amazingly Detailed Defrosting “Captain America” Explanation
  • This Adorable Japanese Cat Game Is Everywhere And We Tried to Figure it Out Neko Atsume is seriously the best, so low pressure and relaxing.

And next week? The start of #readingVD! Woo!

I love the typography article, for obvious reasons. Alas, Adobe Baskerville Italic has a serious kerning problem and we’ve had to give up using Baskerville.

I can’t imagine training my own replacement. Seriously, how does anyone do that and NOT run a disinformation/fuckup campaign? You know you’re being sacked, you’re already looking for another job. I know there’s probably promises of severance and bonuses and what-all but the temptation to burn the place to the ground and leave utter chaos behind me would be waaaay too tempting.

I haven’t played that cat game but I did go and play http://www.infinitecat.com/games/stack-cats.html again after reading this. 🙂
