Light reading schedule this week and next: I have Readercon and associated travel. I’ll pick up again next Wednesday.

War in Heaven, Theodore Beale

Chapter 17: Sons of Pride

Twitter informs me that this is a cunning reference to a video game.

Okay then.

That was one of the most boring battle scenes I have ever read. Again: so much telling as opposed to showing, what we do see is cliche and terrible, and all the POV characters are horrible.

Chapter 18: False Gods

Literally one interesting thing happens in this chapter: the messenger angel tells them that the Fallen are cheering for Prince Lucere, Prince Matraya (who Kaym is occupying, remember), a warrior unknown to them, Baal Phaoton–who is, of course, Christopher. Although none of the creatures in this chapter know that.

I don’t even understand the point of this chapter. Structurally, it does nothing to advance the plot, it just moves a few characters around like pieces on a game board. There’s no character development, nothing.

I’ve read up to page 265.  That’s more than halfway through. This is supposed to be a Christian novel. There is, so far, no Christ. Unless it’s Khasar, the angel-lion.

In conclusion, I’m about where Scully is here. My field of fucks is barren.
